Cherry Glazerr: “Music exists on another plane, it’s naive to think that we own or control it”

Clem Creevy ponders music’s place in the world.

Cherry Glazerr are the kind of band it’s hard not to love. Led by Clementine Creevy, their music is packed with attitude and a fearless sense of humour. New album ’Apocalipstick’ is their first for Secretly Canadian.

Hey Clem, 2016 wasn a rubbish year for many, many reasons – tell us something good and positive.
‘Blond’ by Frank Ocean is one of the best albums ever made.

What inspired your new album, ‘Apocalipstick’?
‘Apocalipstick’ is a snapshot of Cherry Glazerr’s continuous creative flow. My personal interactions with myself and the world inspired the songs on the album.

What was the most rewarding thing about making the record?
Making the record.

What’s your favourite lyric or moment on the album?
“Art is love and love is sloppy.” I think it points to my (flawed and ever-changing) philosophy that there is beauty in letting go of control in every facet of life.

What does being a musician mean to you? Has it changed much over the years?
I don’t know. I feel extremely lucky to be allowed to do what I do. It’s a ridiculous career. It’s the greatest pleasure in the world and I cannot fathom doing anything else.

What do you feel is music’s most important job right now?
We cannot understand music entirely. Music exists on another plane. It’s naive to think that we own or control it; but we like to pretend like we do, lol. Music that humans have interacted with so far has always been a universal healer and outlet for pain, love, fear and other human emotions but humans place political importance on the music, music doesn’t intrinsically have political importance. I feel fucking lucky that music has given itself to us.

Do you have an idea of what you’d like to explore with your music next?
Exploring plant life, my own personal relationships to the earth, civil society and myself.

Do you have any other projects on the go at the moment?
I’m doing a photo series that explores beds.

Aside from the album release, what does 2017 look like for you guys?
Touring the shit out of the US and EU! So excited, we’re very happy and blessed to be able to play shows every night. It’s the ultimate dream for us. [sc name=”stopper” ]
