In Dork’s December/January issue (feat. The 1975, out now), we tackled a bunch of our favourite new bands – the ones whose gigs buzz with excitement, who inspire more devotion in their fans than Emmerdale does from our grans, and who will undoubtedly make 2017 special.
Hello Dream Wife. What have we interrupted?
Rakel: My slumber. It’s been real busy for us these last couple of weeks, fun busy.
Bella: I have just been listening to first mixes of a new track were gonna release next, and it’s sounding great!
Alice: I’m moderating CBBC online right now, it’s my job on the side and the kids are talking about unicorns, it’s cute.
How have you found 2016 so far? What was the most exciting thing that happened for Dream Wife?
Rakel: Besides the world’s politics going up in flames… Well the start of the year we moved to London, released our first EP, got an amazing team behind us & also added some gems to our creative team, got signed to Lucky Number, played a lot of incredible shows, wrote our debut album in a stuffy rehearsal room in Peckham and … a whole bunch of crazy stuff in between really. By the end of the year we’ll have finished recording our debut. So yeah it’s been a productive year and escalated.
Alice: So far it has been extreme personal highs but also major lows politically, I don’t understand what reality or good or evil is at the mo, this year has been so fucked up so far, but Dream Wife keeps on rockin, so that’s something.
Bella: This year has been ridiculous.
What do you think has been the biggest music-related news story of 2016?
BOWIE, DEAD, BECAUSE: BOWIE.
What song would you crown banger of the year?
Rakel: Solange – Cranes in the sky.
Bella: Anything off Madonna, Music INC, just because I’ve listened to it more than anything
Alice: Got deep into Marilyn Manson this year, the crowd banger has to be ‘The Dope Show’. “There’s a lot of pretty, pretty ones / That want to get you high / But all the pretty, pretty ones / Will leave you low and blow your mind.” The lyrics really speak to me over the last year u know. Whatever, everything’s fucked.
Do you have any resolutions for 2017?
Rakel: Less UberEats…
Bella: To never eat another meal deal.
Alice: Don’t stop the rock, we can make it through.
What can you tell us about your plans for next year? How’s the album coming along?
Rakel: Alice’s favourite sentence these past months has been ‘no sorry I can’t make it I’m writing my debut album’ now we’re changing it to ‘no I can’t make it I’m recording my debut album’, hehe.
Bella: Yeah we’ve just been road testing all these new songs are gearing up to start laying them down, new year is looking very exciting.
Alice: We just gotta lay this baby down!
What’s your favourite thing about being in Dream Wife right now?
Alice: It’s a really good focus in light of recent events. While ultimately that’s a pretty self-indulgent thing to say, I mean the focus of this project is personally fulfilling however, what Dream Wife stands for and the messages we are actively putting out there feels like a bigger picture than just three friends that formed a band, it feels like something powerful, something that is bigger than just us, and right now that feeling of a kind of solidarity with both friends and fans is important to remember when it feels like the world is just evil or something.
Bella: The live shows, esp when we get to play cute shows with bands we love.
Rakel: Oh and our tour manager. She’s making sure we’re healthy, in good spirits and on time. Essential.
This time next year, what would you most like to have achieved that you haven’t already?
Rakel: Go tour in Japan. The missing piece to the puzzle.
Alice: To have toured a killer album and feel proud of dat.
Bella: I want to have figured out a way to stop giving myself these massive black blisters.
Which album are you most looking forward to being released next year?
Bella: Ours?! Can I say that? I don’t really know what’s being released next year, maybe Pixies? Do they have something coming out?
Alice: Yeah are we allowed to say that, because I’m so so excited!
Rakel: Ditto. Hope Tommy Genesis releases some new stuff.
Who do you think will be the biggest new band of 2017?
Bella: Joey Fourr.
Alice: I’m backing Joey Fourr for total world domination.
Rakel: Go Joey! [sc name=”stopper” ]
