“It must’ve been about twenty feet from the barrier to the stage!” guitarist Liam Matthews exclaims of the group’s performance at Leeds Festival. “You feel really disconnected from the crowd. It’s hard to judge what the atmosphere in the tent is like.” Sure, it might be a challenge, but it’s one the outfit prove themselves more than capable or rising to. “It’s nice to have a different experience, see a band out of your comfort zone.”
Following the release of second album ‘Ullages’ a mere three months ago, the group are already well into to the next chapter of their existence. With the chess player mentality of thinking three steps ahead, it’s the way the band have always worked. “A lot of people have taken it as having shifted quite drastically in terms of style and genre,” bassist Tom Kelly describes of their second full length. “We’d written most the songs two years previous to when it came out,” Liam explains. “We’re already starting to write the next one now. By the time these songs eventually come out…”

It’s early days for the new material, but if there’s one thing you can expect from Eagulls is that whatever they do won’t be what you expect. “I think it’s pretty boring to do the same thing over and over,” Liam mulls. “For us it needs to be a little bit different, just to keep it interesting.”
Booked up until Christmas with gigs that take them all across the world, the outfit certainly know how to keep things exciting. “I think that’s the main reason that we keep enjoying it,” the guitarist enthuses. “It’s nice to go back to places where you’ve got friends, but the prospect of going to India in December… None of us have ever been before. It’s not the sort of holiday we could afford to go on. The fact our music can take us there and facilitate us seeing the world, it’s great.”
“Two minutes ago we just got told we might be going to China!” Tom announces. “You have no expectation of it as well,” Liam excitedly continues. “We’ve never played there. We don’t know how our music will be received there. And that makes it quite exciting.” Visiting brand new places, and starting to record brand new music as early as next year, Eagulls are spreading their wings and getting ready to soar.
