Brother-sister duo Family Friends are soon to drop a new EP; in the meantime, you can have a listen to latest track ‘I’m Like You’, and introduce yourself to Rebecca and Tom Fitzsimons (coming at us from Melbourne and London respectively) via our super quick Getting to Know Q&A. Handy, eh?
What first got you into wanting to make music? Did you guys listen to similar stuff growing up?
When we were young, yes. A shared back-of-the-car education locked in a great love of the Beatles, and disco music.
We’ve always played together, but only decided to really get a whole song of our own down and out to the world a couple of years back. That ended up being our first single, ‘Sometimes’.
Do you have any music memories together from when you were younger that you’re particularly fond of?
Afternoons of boredom in school holidays, choreographing dances to the Zombies and lip-syncing to Elvis albums.
How do you split your time between Melbourne and London? That must be tricky.
It’s all good. We’re here with you now aren’t we?
What’s the dynamic like between you within the band?
Very much like brother and sister.
How long did it take you to figure out what you wanted Family Friends to sound like?
It was pretty fluid, but probably took us about two years to get to sounding something like we do now. Hopefully in another two years we will sound like something else again.
What can you tell us about your new EP?
We recorded it last year in a tiny room in West London. It’s a banger.
Do you have big plans for 2017?
Of course.
What do you do for fun?
Cold pints in an old pub with a fat cat.
