Getting to know… White Room

The Brighton band are premiering their new video, too.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]To celebrate their biggest shows to date – a night each at Brighton’s Patterns, and London’s Moth Club ‘fyi’ – White Room are today debuting their new video for ‘Twisted Celebration’. Shot in their hometown, Brighton, it sees the guys get up to mischief by the sea. Vocalist Jake Smallwood tells us about his band, and their new vid.

Hey Jake, how’s it going?
Hello hello, I’m doing just dandy thank you.

How did you guys all meet and get together?
We were all at a variety of schools together at various points, growing up in Brighton and over the years started creating together. We’ve basically known each other forever.

Have you always been on the same page in terms of the kind of music you want to make?
Haha, are we now? I think we’ve always shared a basic picture for our musical direction and probably always will do, but if we all saw the exact same vision at all times then things would get pretty boring pretty quick. Bands need different avenues for inspiration to always move forward.

Did you have a musical upbringing?
Yeah for sure, music has always been a constant in my life. Radio or albums playing at home, in the car or wherever.

Are you creative in non-musical ways too?
Yeah, each in our own way. Recently we’ve been getting into working on visuals for live shows so you can expect to see them in at the shows coming up in London and Brighton next week.

What do you do for fun?
All sorts. The recent snow was a nice catalyst for recent mischief though…

What would you most like to achieve during your music career?
That’s tricky, but I guess one thing I’d have to say is to produce a constantly evolving discography and one that stands the test of time. I’d also love to play an iconic venue like the Royal Albert Hall or Radio City.

What’s been the highlight of your time as a musician so far?
Well working and supporting one of my all-time idols, Paul Weller, has to be up there for sure. Also signing to DeltaSonic and getting our first ever Vinyl printed for our last release ‘Eight’.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Tell us about your new video for ‘Twisted Celebration’.
Ahh yes I love this video. It was incredible to film. We managed to take over the Carrousel down on the Brighton seafront, which is actually original from 1888. Pretty fitting for a song featured in a record called ‘Eight’!
A load of the performance had to be done to the track at half speed so that in the edit the footage could get ramped up to full speed, which gave the illusion of the carousel spinning out of control so there were plenty awkward shots hanging upside down attempting to keep dead still while singing in slow motion, haha. Not the easiest video we’ve ever filmed that’s for sure but certainly one of the more memorable ones. Visually it’s great, the colours of the horses and lights just pop beautifully.

What else have you got coming up? There are live dates, right? What about festivals?
Yes we’ve got our two biggest headline shows to date coming up very soon. We’re playing Patterns (Brighton) and Moth Club (London) on 15th/16th March, which are ones you’re not going to want to miss. Great supports on both nights and we’ll be playing some new unreleased material as well.

What bands are you most looking forward to seeing at festivals this year?
I would love to catch a HMLTD festival set this summer. Also Insecure Men and if possible Nick Cave.
A few of our friends in Brighton have also just started up a new group called Opus Kink and are booked in for a couple festivals so hopefully we’ll get to catch them at one of them.
