“It’s been just over a year since I first released anything. If you told me two years ago that, that crowd would be at Reading for me, I wouldn’t have believed you at all.,” starts Amber Bain before pausing. “Actually, it was still a massive shock today so that’s not a very good example. If you told me I’d even be on my third EP, I’d be shocked.”
Well, past Amber, brace yourself. We caught your present day counter-part shortly after she finished her set at Reading Festival and it turns out, following the release of ‘Clean’ and ‘Pools to Bathe In’ last year, The Japanese House is currently sat on a finished, third EP. “That’s going to be released soon,” she offers. “I’ve been on tour from January to June and I do most of my writing on the road but you can’t get into the studio so as soon as I got back, I recorded it. I’ve been focusing on that but now it’s done I have to work out how the hell I’m going to play these new songs live.”
“There’s a lot more live elements and live instruments on this record,” Amber continues. “A lot of my music has guitar but they’re a lot more prominent with this EP.” And as for beyond that, “I just plod along and just focus on writing music rather than how many records I sell. I don’t really think about achieving things. I just want to enjoy the outcome of them. I want to be pleased and proud of the music I make. That sounds really cheesy. I like creating something that’s original and using techniques that not everyone uses all the time. Creating an original sound, that’s my aim. It’s a process though,” she adds. “As soon as you get to a certain point, your goals or what you expect from yourself change. There are really shocking moments like today though. I nearly cried. I was so emotional at the last song, people were singing along.”
