Pale Waves have properly released two songs since signing to Dirty Hit. Both absolute stormers. If you’re hungry for more though, fear not. The band are (thankfully) sat on a load of ‘em.
“It’s still early days,” reasons Heather-Baron Gracie backstage at Reading Festival. But already Pale Waves are already causing something of a ruckus. “We just want to do amazing shows and have an impact on people.”
‘There’s A Honey’ and ‘Television Romance’ are both slices of dark pop-perfection, capturing an air of mystery inside the ever-swelling bubble. The reception, unexpected but “absolutely mental” according to Ciara Doran. “It’s been pretty intense.”
But that’s not where the excitement ends. The band currently have “quite a few songs,” in their arsenal. Because obviously. “When we had ‘There’s A Honey’ out, people were like ‘How are you going to tour with The 1975 with only one song? You’re going to have to play like 5 different versions of it.’”
“Come on guys,” grins Ciara. “Obviously we’ve got more songs.”
“We’re going in to record in September and we’re going to do a few tracks this time. We’ve got a few recordings but we just need to keep making them better. We’re perfectionists. That’s why it takes so long. We want it to be right when it comes out. You can’t take it back when it’s out there,” continues Heather. Inspired by, “situations” Pale Waves, “couldn’t stop writing,” even if they wanted to. “Sometimes there are times when you don’t really want to do anything but you kind of have to because you know something really great might come out. We have a clear vision of ourselves and who we want to be.”
“But also, I don’t think we’ve had a chance to show all the sides yet,” adds Ciara before Heather continues. “Musically, we have a lot more to give. It’s diverse. We’ve got a lot of songs that, if you heard them, you’d be like ‘that’s not a Pale Waves song’ It’s stuff that’s different from ‘There’s A Honey’ and ‘Television Romance’ but it does kind of sound like us.”
