In Dork’s December/January issue (feat. The 1975, out now), we tackled a bunch of our favourite new bands – the ones whose gigs buzz with excitement, who inspire more devotion in their fans than Emmerdale does from our grans, and who will undoubtedly make 2017 special. This here’s Sarah from Nimmo, who’s not long woken up…
How have you found 2016? What was the most exciting thing that happened for Nimmo?
This year has been great. We spent all of last year writing and recording but this year we had a nice divide between finishing bits of the album and a bit of touring. Bestival and Secret Garden Party were amazing but I think it’s definitely got to be the playing Wembley arena with Years & Years and the recent tour we just did with MØ. That was magical.
You’ve not long finished touring with MØ, how was it? Did you hang out much?
Yeah, we actually met on the Years and Years tour in April but we got to hang out way more this time. We all get along so well, which is so much fun when you’re touring with someone. She has a lovely band and a lovely team and to be honest, me and Reva felt like we had known her for years!
What do you think has been the biggest music-related news story of 2016?
I would say Bowie and Prince passing away were probably the two biggest I can think of. Then also the Viola Beach tragedy. Chris Martin even paid them tribute at Glastonbury, didn’t he? Sadly this year has too many unexpected and tragic losses in music.
What song would you crown banger of the year?
Gonna go with something a bit obvious but Drake ‘Controlla’ soundtracked some very very fun times this year, haha. We made some new friends for life this summer and we all share many jokes over this track.
What’s top of your bucket list for 2017?
Glastonbury!
You’ve said your debut album is done and dusted – what can you tell us about it, and when can we expect to hear it?
It’s a body of work that really represents where we are in our lives right now. There’s a lot of themes of fear and displacement when coming into your mid-twenties. There are songs about the fear of seeing the generation above us passing away and about gripping on to the moments we have now in order to keep the memories of loved ones as three-dimensional and pure as possible. There’s some more banging pop stuff like ‘Dancing Makes Us Brave’ in which we talk about the need to go out and physically lose yourself in dancing to move through and past bad situations. It’s a 50/50 mix between electronics and live instruments and we think it’s a beast!
What’s your favourite thing about being in Nimmo right now?
My favourite thing about being in NIMMO right now is what it’s always been. Being able to work so closely and comfortably with people I love.
Who do you think will be the biggest new band of 2017?
Hopefully Little Cub. They are great! [sc name=”stopper” ]
