Ahead of playing the slot at Reading Festival that they’ve been dreaming about since starting the band, we made Sundara Karma reflect on everything that’s happened since ‘Youth Is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect’. We’re fun like that.
The album came out earlier this year, what’s the reaction been like?
Oscar: “It’s been ultimately positive. When you put an album out your idea of it changes a little bit with it. But that’s always good. You change and you grow up a little bit. Playing all the songs every night as well has an impact on it. I think we’re ready to put out new material for sure though.”
Seeing kids react to those songs must change how you view them as well?
Oscar: “Yeah, that’s been the most rewarding part of it. Playing the songs in front of people and to our fanbase, who are fucking legends really. They make it all worthwhile.”
And so, new material. You thinking about it already?
Oscar: “Tentatively, yeah. There’s not enough of it to have a proper clear idea yet. There are a few early signs we can reach to tell where it’s going sonically though.”
Anything shocking?
Oscar: “Reggae, dubstep.”
Everyone always goes reggae!
Oscar: “It’s the second album, it’s always reggae.”
Dom: “That’s going to take us to the next level.”
Oscar: “That’s a game changer.”
Headliners next year?
Oscar: “The Reading Reggae Festival.”
Dom: “Legitimate reggae from Reading.”
Oscar: “That’s the album name!”
Amazing, glad we nailed that. What are your plans for the rest of the year?
Dom: “We’ve got our tour coming up. We’ve got a Brixton date and then we’ve got something up our sleeves that’s going to be new and different.”
Oscar: “This tour is going to be our biggest tour to date. We want to step everything up for this one. It’s mainly for the people who have come to our shows 6 or 7 times before. We want to do something different for them.”
Dom: “A hologram of Bob Marley to launch the reggae album!”
Hayden: “Or a hologram of UB40.”
Oscar: “That’s kind of more what it would be.”
