2017 has been rubbo for a lot of things, but not bands. We’ve had a bumper crop of returning superstars, dazzling debut albums and live shows that’ll knock your socks off.
The Amazons’ self-titled album stormed into the Top Ten earlier this year, and with mega gigs planned for months to come, this is only just the beginning.
Hey Matt, how has your 2017 been?
It’s been a whirlwind of year.
What have been your defining moments?
So many. Playing Jools Holland, having a UK Top 10 Album, playing Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, playing our first shows out in South Korea, Japan and the USA.
What’s your album of the year?
Hard to choose. The QOTSA record ‘Villains’ is great; I think the Royal Blood record was a good comeback too. Lorde’s album ‘Melodrama’ probably pips them all to the top, however.
So, it’s nearly Christmas – are you guys going to exchange presents?
Nah, our presents to ourselves is space I think! We’ve spent a lot of time together this year.
Do you have any favourite Christmas party games?
We’ve had a fair few never-ending games of Monopoly over the years, so we tend to avoid that one now. I like Risk, but no-one seems to want to play it with me.

What’s the worst Christmas present you’ve ever received?
Nothing springs to mind, I must erase the bad stuff. Probably a pen or some socks from a distant relative. When I was younger, I’d feel so guilty if I didn’t like a present.
What will you be doing this New Year’s Eve?
We’re thinking of going somewhere different this year. Edinburgh, Dublin or some kind of cottage in the middle of nowhere with our pals could be fun.
Do you have any resolutions for 2018?
I get a bit mixed between goals and resolutions. I’m working on my goals for next year, and there are plenty. New music is probably at the forefront. I guess with resolutions it’s some kind of thing in your life you want to resolve and change. I’d like to relax more and to try and disconnect more from social media/phone/laptop. I think living in this virtual world fucks with the mind, distracts from the important things and kills creativity.
Who do you think will be the biggest new band of 2018?
We’re tipping Yonaka or The Pale White. Both incredible bands.
Which album are you most looking forward to being released next year?
I think the Arctic Monkeys’ new record will be a surprise for everyone.
