The Japanese House: “‘Party Like a Russian’ is the single most insane song I’ve ever heard”

Her house, her rules, her highlights of 2016.

In Dork’s December/January issue (feat. The 1975, out now), we tackled a bunch of our favourite new bands – the ones whose gigs buzz with excitement, who inspire more devotion in their fans than Emmerdale does from our grans, and who will undoubtedly make 2017 special.

Hello Amber. How are you today, and what have we interrupted?
I’m good thank you. Slightly hungover in the van, driving from Berlin to Vienna. I made one of the best decisions of my life and brought my duvet and pillow with me in the van on tour. So you’ve interrupted me re-watching game of thrones from the beginning wrapped up in my duvet like a bug.

How has 2016 been for you? What was the most exciting thing that happened for The Japanese House?
2016 has been great. Lots of touring at the beginning of the year; I’ve played so many memorable shows, but I think the most exciting thing has been either our Reading set, or playing a sold out Heaven.

You work a lot with this issue’s cover stars, The 1975 – what makes them such a special band do you think?
I work with George, the drummer of The 1975, but I’ve known them all for about four years now and they’re all lovely guys. I think what makes them a special band is their ability to create such varied and topical pop music which is unashamedly bluntly reflective. That’s why so many people connect with them. Their production is also incredible. And their live show. And their devoted fans.

What song would you crown banger of the year?
Robbie William’s ‘Party Like a Russian’ because it is the single most insane song I’ve ever heard.
My actual favourite song of the year I think is ‘Meet You in the Maze’ – James Blake. I’ve only listened to it about five times, because it makes me cry. Amazing harmonies.

Do you have any resolutions for 2017?
Maybe drink less. Read more.

What’s the most exciting thing about being an up-and-coming musician right now?
Having the opportunity to tour around the world. Especially touring with my friends. Wahoo!

This time next year, what would you most like to have achieved that you haven’t already?
I’d like to have made an album. I will have done.

Which album are you most looking forward to being released next year?
Marika Hackman’s!

Who do you think will be the biggest new band of 2017?
I have no idea, there are too many good ones! [sc name=”stopper” ]
