There’s a new Pixies album coming, so here’s a playlist to ramp up the excitement

Classic tracks and choice cuts.

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]The Pixies long awaited reunion in 2004 turned out to be the longest reconnection in history as the band toured the world for over 10 years playing shows and reminding people of just how great and how important they are. The only problem was there wasn’t actually any new music. For a band that burned so brightly in such a short period it didn’t quite sit right for them to be trawling the nostalgia circuit forever. So they rectified that problem with 2013’s ‘Indie Cindy’ comeback album. The only problem was there wasn’t any Kim Deal.

The bands long-term bassist’s acrimonious departure left a rather large hole in the Pixies patchwork that they struggled to initially fill, first employing bassist Kim Shattuck before replacing her with esteemed indie rock bass player for hire Paz Lenchantin. All this added up to a band not really hitting top gear in their comeback despite ‘Indie Cindy’ offering fleeting glimpses of promise. The forthcoming album ‘Head Carrier’ should hopefully finally see lift off on the real Pixies reunion.

The omens for ‘Head Carrier’ are good. With Lenchantin firmly in place and writing songs, the Pixies can finally become a band again. Perhaps equally as important is the album artwork provided by legendary 4AD designer Vaughan Oliver. Indeed, the only thing that has been a constant throughout all the Pixies upheaval going right back to the beginning and their original 1993 implosion has been his distinctive and evocative art.

‘Head Carrier’ is a ‘proper’ Pixies album. Written, recorded and released as one complete work it should work as a fully functioning comeback rather more satisfyingly than the scattergun release of ‘Indie Cindy’. Also, the single is great. That helps too. If anyone wants a quick Pixies fix to remind them of one of indie rock’s most important bands we’ve helpfully compiled a few classics and choice album cuts to help whet your appetite as the Pixies reunion picks up pace.
