The Christmas tree is officially down, the last pigs in blankets have been gobbled up, and there’s just one tin of chocolates left. You know what that means? It’s nearly festival announcement season! But just who will be joining Radiohead at the top of Glastonbury’s bill? We’ve put a list of candidates together who would be pretty swell…
First up, we have Foo Fighters Grohl & co. have been announcing festivals across Europe and with their new record set to be recorded this year, what better time to make their first headline appearance at Worthy Farm? After the disappointment of their cancellation in 2015 after Grohl broke his leg on stage in Sweden, this could be the perfect opportunity to make up for it.
What about Biffy Clyro? They’ve headlined Reading twice, Sonisphere, their native T in the Park and have nabbed themselves a headline slot at Download this year. Undoubtedly, they can do it – alongside the multiple festival headlines they only finished their sold out UK arena tour last month. Could this be the year we see Worthy Farm bellow along to ‘Mountains?’
Last month’s cover stars The 1975 are also in with a shout. It’s hard to deny that they’re pretty massive now with 2 sold out nights at the O2 as well as selling out the rest of the tour across the country. It’s no secret that Matt Healy & co want to headline Glastonbury someday so why not off the back of the success of 2016’s longest album title?
Could it be everybody’s favourite ginger Ed Sheeran? The Sun certainly seems to think so, and considering we haven’t heard much off him since his 3 sold out nights at Wembley Stadium and with new music coming this week – it could be the time he takes his crown at the very top of British music with a Glastonbury headline slot?
Perhaps The Smiths? Hear us out on this one – As we found out from his autobiography, Marr revealed that he had had ‘the talk’ with Morrissey about reforming in 2008 and agreed to it before Morrissey went quiet on the idea. Could that have stirred back up Morrissey’s urge to get the band back together? Where better for arguably the biggest reunion of all time than the Pyramid stage?
The xx could cement their return with a Pyramid headline slot – the band certainly have an affinity towards the festival but are they a bit too niche for the Pyramid? 7 sold out nights at Brixton Academy (a whopping 35,000 tickets) seem to disagree.
Could Glastonbury 2017 be the return of Oasis? The band have been rumoured every year since they split to do a multi-billion pound reunion tour and headline Glastonbury but it’s a tad unlikely as Noel is putting the finishing touches to his 3rd High Flying Birds album whilst Liam prepares for his solo debut. Who wouldn’t love it though?
We don’t quite know yet who’s gonna be gracing the Pyramid Stage Saturday & Sunday nights but they’ll have a lot to live up from Adele and Coldplay last year.
