Black Honey make music to soundtrack blockbusters. With their name in lights, the group return to London’s The Lexington for the second of two sold-out shows in the space of a week and it’s the stuff of Hollywood legends.
From the opening rattle of ‘Madonna’, Black Honey start as they mean to go on with hit after hollering hit. Every magnificent cut from their back catalogue shows off a slightly different view of the band’s ever-expanding vision but each one lands true. ‘All My Pride’ is all jaunty angles and curled lips, ‘Sleep Forever’ is aggressively hypnotic while ‘On Your Time’ bubbles with an assured future. Live, all that potent energy runs riot.
Black Honey are always in command though. From the crouched promise of ‘Mothership’ that sees Izzy explain, “What you feel, I feel it too. We’re in this shit together,” through the lent secrets of ‘Bloodlust’ and off through the chaos of ‘Spinning Wheel’ which has never sounded more dangerous or controlled, the band are masters of their own story.
Whereas before it’s all been big dreams and handheld cameras, today sees the band polished, pristine and ready for the spotlight.
Black Honey make music to soundtrack lives. Giving the everyday a rich, powerful sense of importance, they transport you to a world where everything is possible. New song ‘Hello Today’ is that theme tune. The breakaway smash. Everything Black Honey has ever stood for, boiled down and condensed into a tightly wound, spring-loaded anthem that shows defiance, class and a glint of unpredictability. Released into the world for a matter of days, it’s already leading the charge and from the stadium wink of a refreshed ‘Teenagers’ to the ever-expanding ‘Corrine’ (with the actual Corrine in attendance), the band make sure every scene is theirs for the taking. Lights, camera, action. “We’re Black Honey and you’re with us now.”
