Thom Yorke is a serious artist. You can tell, because he gets involved with stuff like ‘new immersive 360 degree audiovisual installations’.
The new ‘thingy’ is called ‘City Rats’, and produced in collaboration with composer Tarik Barri. Presented by the Institute for Sound and Music in Berlin, it’s been built for the ISM Hexadome, a structure with 54 speakers and 6 screens surrounding the audience.
There’s a video previewing a bit of the piece, exxplaining how it all works. “All sounds are visible as objects in 3D space, and the camera’s position determines what we hear and where we hear it,” it says. “Therefore our path through space determines the harmonies, voices, melodies and rhythms we hear.”
