Independent Oxford venue The Cellar is under threat of closure.
The property’s landlord – St Michael’s and All Saints’ Charities – has submitted an application to redevelop the venue once the Lush shop above it moves in early 2018.
A petition to save the venue has so far gathered in excess of 10,000 signatures, and support from local bands including Foals (pictured) and Glass Animals.
“The Cellar off Cornmarket Street could be closed in early 2018 when the retailer Lush vacates its shop,” reads the petition. “The leaseholders Lush sub-lets the basement as a nightclub venue, which will close when it leaves the street. St Michael’s and All Saints Charities, which owns the building, wants to change The Cellar to a retail space.
“We can’t let this happen! The Cellar is the heart of this city’s incredible music scene!”
Upcoming gigs include Banfi (8th September), Fangclub (13th September), Superglu and Bad Pop (14th September) and Flyte (1st October).
