“Hal! Robson! Kanuuuuuuuu!”
We should have known that Manic Street Preachers’ Wales Euro 2016 anthem ‘Together Stronger (C’mon Wales)’ would be a modern classic of the genre, even if the title does sound like it’s campaigning for a combined home nations team. Let that one slide.
After all, how many other Proper Bands would you find penning a chorus singing the praises of Aaron Ramsey, Gareth Bale and Ashley Williams? None, that’s how many. We’ll even let them off the obvious crying about a decades old handball decision and the vague suggestion that without their star winger / inside forward / raumdeuter they couldn’t beat any side.
Because – seriously – Hal. Robson. Kanu. Every song should have a chant climaxing with Hal Robson Kanu.
“It had always been on the cards,” said Manics’ frontman James Dean Bradfield. “Nick had written lyrics for a song during previous campaigns, but of course, they’d all bitten the dust.
“It was the Belgium home game where the cogs in Nick’s head started whirring when we knew it was game on and we had a great chance of qualifying.”
