The Smiths hit the arcades with PETA

Gamers of the world unite.

Having last week offered us his views on London’s new mayor, along with Donald “Thump” and the likelihood of a Smiths reunion – an issue “so remote that the question doesn’t make sense any more” – Morrissey has lent his support, and a chiptune reworking of a Smiths classic, to a video game, now available to play online.

In ‘This Beautiful Creature Must Die’, a collaboration between the Smiths and animal rights group PETA, you’ll need lightning-fast reflexes to fire your rainbow blasts in time to save a series of animals sliding inexorably towards whirring abattoir blades, all soundtracked by an 8-bit take on ‘Meat Is Murder’.

Is Moz a fan of video games, then? He seems to like this one, saying, “This game is the biggest social crusade of all, as we safeguard the weak and helpless from violent human aggression. You don’t get that from Pokémon Go.” We know how you feel, Stephen. Don’t worry, another Squirtle is bound to turn up soon.
